The affiliate click is in trouble. According to a 2025 Pew Research Center study, users clicked a traditional search result on only 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary, compared with 15% when it did not. That is roughly half the clicks gone before your review or comparison post even gets a chance. But the same AI answers that swallow your traffic are being written from affiliate content. That contradiction is where the opportunity sits in 2026.
The click is disappearing, and publishers know it
For fifteen years the affiliate model had one job: rank, earn the click, pass the click to a merchant with a tracking parameter attached. Every step of that chain assumed a human reading a results page.
AI answers break the first link. When Google, ChatGPT or Perplexity summarizes the “best CRM for small business” question directly, many readers never reach the page that did the research. A Press Gazette survey of publishers found respondents expect traffic to fall by 43% on average over the next three years, and about one in five expect losses above 75%.

If you earn affiliate income from review content, treat those numbers as a planning assumption, not a worst case. This is the same forced rethink we covered when Amazon cut affiliate commissions by up to 50%: the channel did not die, but the people who relied on one traffic source and one network got hurt the most.
The twist: AI answers are built on affiliate content
Here is the part most doom posts skip. An October 2025 EMARKETER report found that almost 70% of the sites ChatGPT cited when discussing eyewear brand Zenni were affiliate marketing content. The models are not replacing product research. They are ingesting it, summarizing it, and sometimes naming the source.
That makes citation the new click. If an AI assistant names your site as the source of a recommendation, you get brand exposure and, increasingly, a linked mention that some users do follow. If it paraphrases you anonymously, you get nothing. The difference often comes down to how quotable and well-structured your content is: clear verdicts, named criteria, real pricing tables, and pages that answer one question completely. The tactics overlap heavily with what we described in winning position zero despite AI Overviews.
Agentic checkout changes who gets paid
The second shift is bigger than summaries: AI agents now complete purchases. OpenAI’s Instant Checkout, announced with Stripe under the Agentic Commerce Protocol, lets US ChatGPT users buy from Etsy sellers in chat, with Shopify merchants following. OpenAI says merchants pay a fee on completed purchases while results stay unsponsored. And in March 2026, CNBC reported that OpenAI reworked the experience toward dedicated retailer apps inside ChatGPT that route users to the retailer’s own site to finish the purchase.
Notice what is missing from that flow: the affiliate link. When an agent moves from question to checkout inside one interface, no tracked click ever fires, so no commission is recorded even if your content influenced the choice. Networks and merchants are experimenting with agent-level attribution, but nothing is standard yet. Merchants should read our guides on preparing your store for AI shopping agents and getting listed where AI agents buy direct in ChatGPT, because the same protocols deciding which stores agents can buy from will shape which recommendations get monetized.
What to actually do now

First, make your content citable. Publish original data points: your own test criteria, your own comparisons, numbers nobody else has. AI systems cite sources that say something specific. Generic “10 best” lists scraped from vendor pages are exactly what gets paraphrased without credit.
Second, stop depending on the last click. Negotiate flat placement fees, sponsored inclusion clearly labeled as such, or hybrid deals with merchants who value your influence even when tracking fails. If a merchant sees branded search lift after your coverage, that is billable.
Third, own the relationship. An email list, a community, a tool people return to. Traffic an AI cannot intercept is traffic that arrives on purpose. Every affiliate site should be converting anonymous visitors into subscribers now, while the visitors still come.
Fourth, watch the attribution experiments. Networks are piloting server-side and agent-aware tracking. Join those pilots early. The publishers who helped shape cookie-based tracking twenty years ago earned outsized terms; the same will happen with agent commerce.
The takeaway
Affiliate marketing is not dying. The click-based version of it is. The research, the trust, and the influence that made affiliate content valuable are the exact raw material AI answers run on. Get cited, get paid in more than one way, and own an audience no algorithm can take back. Do that and 2026 is a repricing, not an ending.
