AI shopping agents reward stores that are easy for machines to understand and easy for buyers to trust. Your first move is not a flashy chatbot. It is clean product data, accurate prices, clear policies, crawlable product pages, and checkout systems that do not break when a shopper arrives from an AI surface.
If you sell on Shopify, some of the plumbing is already moving for you. Shopify says products are automatically accessible to AI channels like ChatGPT, Shop, and Copilot through Shopify Catalog. If you sell on another platform, or if your catalog is messy, you need to prepare the old-fashioned way: make every product page and feed tell the same truth.
Start With The Product Feed
Agents cannot recommend what they cannot parse. OpenAI’s ChatGPT shopping help says product results consider structured metadata such as price and product descriptions, plus other product information. OpenAI’s product feed documentation says merchants should provide structured product feeds so ChatGPT can index and display products with up-to-date price and availability.
Audit your feed like a buyer depends on it, because now one might. Every sellable SKU should have a stable ID, clear title, useful description, current price, availability, image URL, seller name, seller URL, return policy URL, and target country. For variants, do not hide size, color, material, bundle contents, or compatibility in vague option labels.

Make Product Pages Match The Feed
Your feed and product page should say the same thing. Google Merchant Center’s automatic item update guidance says structured data helps Google map price, availability, and condition from your page to product data. Google Search Central also recommends always providing `priceCurrency` because it is required for merchant listing experiences and avoids pricing ambiguity.
For each priority product, check the page title, H1, description, price, sale price, stock status, variant names, delivery promise, reviews, and images. Then inspect the structured data. Product markup should include Product and Offer data, including price, currency, availability, and condition where relevant. If your site says “ships tomorrow” but the feed says “backorder,” an agent has a reason to skip you or show outdated information.
Write For Comparison Questions
AI shopping starts with constraints: “best waterproof backpack under $150,” “quiet air purifier for a nursery,” “gift for a runner who hates bulky watches.” ChatGPT’s shopping research help says it asks follow-up questions about preferences, budget, comfort, size ranges, performance, and trade-offs. That means your product content needs to answer real comparison questions, not just describe a product in catalog language.
Add short FAQ blocks, plain-language sizing notes, compatibility tables, material details, warranty notes, care instructions, and “best for” use cases. If a product has trade-offs, say so.
Clean Up Shipping, Returns, And Trust Signals
OpenAI’s commerce policies say merchants may not misrepresent pricing, availability, origin, condition, or key characteristics, and may not use unclear or misleading refund or return policies. Its product feed spec also includes return-policy, seller, review, Q&A, compliance, and fulfillment fields. Agents are not only comparing products. They are comparing risk.
Publish a return policy that is easy to find, not buried in a footer maze. Show shipping costs or thresholds before checkout. Make warranty, exchange, final-sale, age-restriction, hazardous-material, and compliance notes visible on product pages. If you sell restricted or sensitive products, read the platform commerce policies before assuming an AI surface will list them.
Prepare Checkout Without Rebuilding Everything
You do not need to rebuild checkout tomorrow, but you do need to know where agent checkout is heading. OpenAI says Instant Checkout lets eligible users complete checkout in ChatGPT, while orders, payments, fulfillment, returns, and support remain handled by the merchant’s existing systems. Google says UCP can enable a checkout button on eligible listings in AI Mode and Gemini, and that the merchant remains the seller of record.
For most stores, the near-term checklist is simple: keep payment methods healthy, reduce surprise fees, make guest checkout work, validate tax and shipping logic, and monitor abandoned checkout errors. For stores ready to experiment, review Agentic Commerce Protocol and Universal Commerce Protocol requirements, then decide whether your platform, payment provider, or agency should lead the integration.

Do Not Block The Buyers You Want
There is a tricky balance here. You need bot protection, but you also need legitimate agents and crawlers to read product pages. OpenAI’s shopping research help says some retailers block automated access; when that happens, shopping research may skip those sources or rely on similar products from other sites.
Review robots rules, WAF settings, rate limits, app firewalls, and anti-scraping tools with this in mind. Do not blindly open the doors. Instead, document which crawlers, merchant feeds, APIs, and agent integrations you want to support, then test that your product pages, images, structured data, and policy pages remain accessible. For the fraud side of the equation, see our guide on checkout bot and card-testing controls.
Measure AI Commerce Separately
AI shoppers may not behave like search visitors. They can arrive deeper in the decision, ask fewer pre-sale questions, compare more directly, and care more about availability, price, shipping, and returns. Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts changelog says merchants can track performance across major AI channels, see which queries they rank for, and get recommendations to improve product data.
Create a simple dashboard for AI surfaces: referrals, product-page landings, add-to-cart rate, checkout completion, unavailable-product clicks, return rate, support tickets, and revenue by channel. If you use automations to route these events, our Zapier vs Make vs n8n comparison can help you pick the right tool.

A 30-Day Readiness Plan
Week 1: Export your product catalog and fix missing titles, descriptions, prices, images, variant labels, GTINs, return links, and availability values.
Week 2: Add or repair Product and Offer structured data on top products. Test price, currency, availability, condition, review, and image fields.
Week 3: Rewrite the top 20 product pages around buyer questions, trade-offs, fit, compatibility, shipping, returns, and use cases.
Week 4: Audit checkout, fraud rules, feed refresh timing, analytics, and AI-channel reporting. Then read our explainer on AI agents shopping Shopify stores and our guide to Instant Checkout in ChatGPT.
The takeaway: AI shopping agents do not make messy stores disappear. They make the cleanest, clearest, most machine-readable stores easier to choose. Start there.
